Why organic keywords show “(not provided)”

Search engines withhold organic keywords — here’s what that means.

If an organic search lead shows a keyword of (not provided), that's expected — it's a privacy choice by the search engines, not a gap in tracking.

What's happening

Since 2011, Google (and other search engines since) stopped passing the search term for organic results. So while iTracker360 can see that a visitor came from Google organic search, the specific words they typed aren't available to anyone.

What you can still see

  • Paid search can still carry the keyword, because you configure your ads to pass it (see fixing generic CPC). When a keyword value is available, iTracker360 stores it in the term field.
  • For organic, you'll still get the source and medium (e.g. google / organic) — just not the query.
